The population of India was first done in 1872 and since 1881 it is done every ten years, till now it has been done 15 times. The next 16th population count will be done in 2021. The census is done in several stages. The first phase will be done simultaneously across the country from 12 August 2019 to 30 September 2019 for sampling, then in February 2021 and finally from 1 March to 5 March 2021. For this purpose, government school teachers in the state are employed. They are given a prescribed form in which they go from house to house in their given area and collect various information and hand over time to their higher officials and they deliver it to a higher level. Eventually, complete information from all states is collected at the central office.

The data will be collected from the mobile app. The government has said that about 33 lakh census workers will go door to door. For this, the central government is developing a special Android mobile app. He also indicated to bring a universal card for all essential civic amenities. The government said that only one card scheme is possible in lieu of Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving license, voter ID card etc.
